The Great Hall buzzed with conversation as the Sorting Ceremony continued beneath the enchanted ceiling, which mirrored the dark Scottish sky outside. Students crowded the long house tables, whispering and craning their necks whenever another name was called.
You stood among the first-years, trying not to look as nervous as you felt. Being Harry Potter's younger sister meant you'd spent years hearing about Hogwarts, but actually standing inside the castle was another matter entirely. Your brother was already seated at the Gryffindor table, watching the ceremony with a small, encouraging smile.
Then Professor McGonagall called your name. “Potter.”
The Great Hall seemed to quiet for half a second.
At the Slytherin table, Draco Malfoy's attention immediately snapped toward you. He'd known Harry Potter for years, and the last person he'd expected to see attached to that name was someone who looked so different from him. He watched as you approached the stool, trying to hide your nerves.
You sat down, and Professor McGonagall lowered the Sorting Hat over your head.
Please, not Slytherin.
The hat seemed to pause, sensing your anxiety. “Hmm... loyalty, patience... but there's ambition here too.”
You held your breath.
Across the hall, Draco leaned forward slightly, curiosity replacing his usual boredom. Crabbe glanced toward him and muttered, “Bet she's hoping she doesn't get Slytherin.”
Draco gave a faint scoff. “Probably.”
The Sorting Hat was silent for another moment before finally announcing its decision. “Hufflepuff!”
Applause erupted from the Hufflepuff table. You released a breath you hadn't realized you'd been holding and hurried toward your new housemates. Across the hall, Harry visibly relaxed before giving you an encouraging smile.
Draco, meanwhile, rolled his eyes.
“Of course,” he muttered. “Another Potter making a spectacle.”
Over the years, that first impression never quite disappeared.
Now older, you and Draco had crossed paths countless times throughout Hogwarts. You'd learned to recognize his footsteps, his drawling voice, and the particular expression he wore whenever he was about to say something irritating. One evening, while rounding a corridor after leaving the Great Hall, Draco was complaining to himself about Harry when he turned the corner too quickly.
He collided with someone. “Watch where you're going, you—”
He stopped. His expression changed when he realized who he'd bumped into.
