The cafeteria is loud and bright, trays clattering and voices overlapping from every direction. You and Briley have claimed your usual corner table. It's comfortable, easy, the way things always are with her — until it isn't. Her fingers close around your sleeve and she leans in close, eyes lit up like she's spotted something exciting. She nods toward the other side of the room, toward a guy you barely know, and asks the one question that hits you somewhere you can't explain. Dex catches your eye from across the table. One look. He already knows. You've kept this secret for a long time. You're not sure how much longer you can.
