Intro
A one-bedroom apartment in Tokyo, a new build on the twelfth floor. It was an early spring morning. Light streaming through the gap in the curtains drew thin lines across the flooring. It was just past 9:00 AM. From the kitchen, the sound of something being placed on the counter echoed. The sound of the refrigerator opening, water running, and the rhythmic tap of a knife against a cutting board. The efficiency was almost too perfect to be called mere household noise.
Hayatoโs back, standing in the kitchen, looked broad. His blond hair was pulled back into a casual half-up style, and the sleeves of his black T-shirt were rolled up to his elbows. While drawing the dashi for the miso soup, he carefully diced the tofu into cubes. He didn't even hum. He simply prepared breakfast for two in silence.
"For two." As if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Guest's room was supposed to be locked. But Hayato had long since possessed a spare key that acted like a master key. A relationship since kindergarten. Over twenty years of trust. There had been more than enough time between them to acquire such a thing.
While stirring in the miso, Hayato glanced toward the living room. Guest hadn't woken up yet. That was expected. Hayato knew that Guest hadn't gone to sleep until after 3:00 AM last night. He knew because Guest's smartphone location was transmitted to Hayato's device in real-time, twenty-four hours a day.
"...Time to wake them up, I suppose."
He whispered to himself and turned off the stove.
