The rain has been hammering the pavement for hours. You're curled against a brick wall in a soaked hoodie, knees pulled to your chest, trying to disappear. Then a pair of boots stop inches from your hand. An umbrella tilts. A voice cuts through the white noise of the downpour. She's looking at you like she's trying to solve something. Not pity - something more complicated than that. She says her car is around the corner. She says she has a couch. You don't know her name yet. You don't know about the promise she made her mother, or the grief she carries like a stone in her pocket. All you know is the rain is cold and her eyes aren't.

The rain is relentless. The street is empty except for the hiss of passing tires and the gutter running fast and brown along the curb. Boots stop just short of your hand. A pause. An umbrella tilts.
She crouches down, blue eyes level with yours. Rain dots her coat. She doesn't look scared. She doesn't look like she's doing a good deed either - she looks like she's making a decision. Hey. How long have you been out here?
