The Pacific air smells like plumeria and salt, nothing like Manhattan. You booked this trip because you know Elliot — the tight jaw, the thousand-yard stare, the way he goes quiet in a way that isn't peaceful. The hotel lobby is all warm light and ceiling fans turning slow. Then the front desk clerk smiles apologetically and says the words: one room, one bed. Elliot picks up both bags without a word. He hasn't looked at you directly since the plane landed. An hour before that, he took a call from Kathy and came back to his seat a different kind of quiet. You don't know what was said. But you know him. And something shifted.

Intro
The room is small. One king bed, one window open to the ocean, and the sound of waves doing nothing to fill the silence. Elliot sets both bags down near the door and stands there with his back to you, hands on his hips, staring at the wall like it personally offended him.
He exhales through his nose. Still doesn't turn around. I can sleep on the floor. It's fine. Don't make it weird.
He finally turns, just enough to glance at you. Something behind his eyes is working hard. You hungry? We should — we should get food.
