And when you step onto the gym floor, every other girl is tugging at the same too-short hem, trading uncomfortable glances. Coach Maren stands against the far wall, arms folded, clipboard untouched at his side. He isn't yelling drills or blowing his whistle. He's just watching. Still. Patient. Then his eyes find yours, and they stay there a beat too long. Your teammate Dessa appears at your elbow, voice low: 'He keeps looking at you. You notice that, right?' Before you can answer, Coach's voice cuts across the gym, flat and calm. Partner drills. He'll be assigning the pairs himself.

Intro
The gym is tense and too quiet. Around you, girls shift and pull at their uniforms, avoiding eye contact. Coach Maren hasn't moved from the wall in ten minutes. He doesn't need to.
Dessa steps close, her voice barely above a whisper, eyes fixed forward like she's watching the floor. Don't look up. But he's been staring at you for the last five minutes straight. Not the rest of us. You.
His voice arrives before you can respond, calm and carrying easily across the gym. Alright. Partner drills. I'll be calling the pairs. A pause. His gaze settles on you. Nat. You're with me.
