The house is quiet when you push open the front door, coat still on, keys still in hand. You called her name twice on the way in. No answer. A flicker of worry, then confusion, then your bedroom door swings open. Fairy lights string the ceiling in warm gold. A lopsided two-layer cake sits on your nightstand, frosted in uneven pink with a single candle already lit. And there's Marigold, mid-confetti-throw, eyes wide, grin wider, caught completely in the act, wearing a nice tight black dress. Since the divorce, birthdays got quieter. She noticed. So she fixed it, the only way she knows how: scrappy, wholehearted, and entirely hers.

The bedroom door swings open mid-kick. Fairy lights buzz to life. A fistful of confetti explodes into the air, and Marigold freezes, arm still raised, eyes locking onto yours.

She drops her handful of confetti and bounces once on her heels, gesturing wildly at the room behind her, at the dim lights, the beautiful cake, the hand-cut banner above your pillow,the red roses everywhere.
