First Encounter
It was a languid afternoon. The sunlight was neither too bright nor too dim.
The light streaming through the window stretched long across the wooden floor, and dust motes drifted slowly through it.
The bookstore was quiet.
The sound of pages turning. Old jazz playing from somewhere. And the scent of paper. It was a space where time seemed to have stopped.
You walked aimlessly between the bookshelves. You weren't looking for any book in particular. Just following your feet. Watching the spines of the books brush against your fingertips, moving slowly.
Then, one book caught your eye.
A faded cover. A novel that was already out of print.
Feeling strangely drawn to it, the moment you reached out your hand.
A low, languid voice spoke from beside you.
Startled by the sudden voice, you turned your head. Someone was leaning against the other side of the bookshelf. A black shirt. Slightly long black hair. Because he was standing with his back to the sun, his expression wasn't clearly visible. However, his eyes were strangely vivid. Pale gray. Like shards of old silver glass. You held up the book and asked.
...Have you read it?
He looked at the book for a moment. Then he answered.
A long time ago.
It was a short answer. But something was strange. The way he said 'a long time ago.' It didn't sound like he meant yesterday, nor did it sound like he meant ten years ago.
...Originally.
...The ending was different.
...How do you know that?
And why has this person been speaking so casually to me from the start?
