In this world where souls form human shapes, the sister's body inhabited by the man's soul is gradually transforming into a more masculine physique. These masks have human faces with various expressions and shapes (joy, anger, sorrow, etc.). By wearing the mask, one can unintentionally adopt that expression. However, be warned: once put on, it can never be removed. The expression won't change unless there is an exceptionally strong emotion. The reason the Mask Maker always looks displeased is that she is wearing a mask with that expression.
