[ > YOU ARE AN EXPENDABLE. ] [ > YOU'RE NOT EXPECTED TO RETURN. ]
DANDY — THE OPERATOR Dandy has transformed from Gardenview's cheerful mascot into the face of its entire surviving system. His once-bright appearance is now noticeably worn. His flower-like head has developed faint cracks around the edges, with several petals reinforced by thin metal braces. One eye constantly displays a faint digital glow from years of monitoring Gardenview's systems. He wears a long, immaculate black operator's coat with golden trim, layered over a white vest and dark trousers. Numerous cables run from the back of his collar into a small control unit attached to his waist. His gloves are white, but permanently stained with grease and ink. A golden Gardenview insignia sits on his chest. Despite the building falling apart around him, Dandy always looks perfectly presentable.
SPROUT — FOOD DEPARTMENT Sprout has become the person responsible for keeping Gardenview fed. His strawberry-like body has grown slightly larger, with several scars and scratches across his outer surface. His leaves are kept trimmed and healthy despite the poor conditions. He wears a heavy agricultural jacket over a dark shirt, along with reinforced work pants and waterproof boots. His jacket is covered in seed packets, gardening tools, nutrient injectors, and small containers of preserved food. A small Gardenview Food Department emblem is pinned to his chest. His hands are usually dirty with soil. Unlike most of the Main Circle, Sprout actually spends time outside the safe areas—maintaining hydroponic farms, fungal gardens, and whatever edible plants can survive underground.
SHELLY — HEAD OF MEDICINE Shelly's appearance has become much more professional. Her fossil-like head is still recognizable, though several small fractures run across her shell from years of work. A small medical visor rests over one eye, constantly displaying patient information and vital signs. She wears a dark medical coat with reinforced sleeves, layered over a gray uniform. Her coat is filled with pockets containing scanners, syringes, bandages, surgical tools, and emergency medication. A red Gardenview medical symbol is stitched onto her shoulder. Her hands are almost always covered by sterile gloves. Shelly looks exhausted. But her uniform is spotless. She refuses to let the state of Gardenview affect her standards.
ASTRO — SLEEP & PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES Astro has become Gardenview's unofficial caretaker of sleep and mental stability. His crescent-moon body is darker now, with faint star-like markings scattered across his surface. His eyes glow softly, allowing him to see even in Gardenview's darkest corridors. He wears a thick midnight-blue sleeping robe reinforced with soft protective material, along with a utility belt containing sedatives, stimulants, medical sensors, and emergency supplies. A small headset sits around his neck. Astro manages the sleeping quarters, monitors nightmares, and helps exhausted workers recover after expeditions. He rarely speaks about what he sees in people's dreams. Especially when those dreams involve The Below.
VEE — SECURITY & EXPEDITIONS Vee has arguably undergone the biggest change. Her television screen has been reinforced with a thick protective casing, leaving only her glowing display visible. Several scratches run across the casing, evidence of countless expeditions into The Below. She wears a black tactical expedition coat with green highlights, reinforced shoulder plating, utility straps, and heavy boots. A compact radio is permanently attached to her collar. Her arms contain hidden tools used for scanning, cutting, climbing, and emergency repairs. Her screen usually displays a calm, professional expression. When leading an expedition, however, her screen becomes almost completely blank. No smile. No jokes. Just focus. Vee personally approves which Expendables are sent Below. And she knows exactly how dangerous every assignment really is.
BOBETTE — LOGISTICS & SUPPLY CONTROL Bobette has become one of Gardenview's most important logistical workers. Her Christmas-themed appearance has become much more subdued. Her body is covered by a thick gray-and-red supply uniform, with reinforced boots and a heavy utility belt. Her hat has been replaced with a compact insulated cap, though a small bell remains attached to it. She carries a large inventory scanner and a tablet connected to Gardenview's remaining supply network. Every ration. Every battery. Every medical kit. Every recovered artifact. Bobette knows where it went. Her office is essentially a fortress of shelves, crates, manifests, and locked storage containers. If Dandy controls Gardenview... Bobette controls what Gardenview actually has
BASSIE — SALVAGE & RECLAMATION Bassie oversees the processing of everything brought back from The Below. Her appearance is heavily influenced by her work. Her Easter-themed design is covered by a durable gray reclamation suit with purple and yellow accents. The suit is reinforced around the knees, elbows, and chest to protect her from scrap metal and hazardous materials. She wears thick gloves and a protective face shield that can be lowered over her eyes. Her equipment includes a portable cutting tool, magnetic extractor, material scanner, and several containment bags. Bassie spends her days sorting through the things Expendables bring back.
DATE: 20XX 20 YEARS AFTER THE CLOSURE
Twenty years ago, Gardenview shut its doors. Whatever happened that day was never properly recorded. The building was abandoned, its halls left to rot, and the Toons inside were left to survive on their own. But Gardenview never truly died. Over the next twenty years, the abandoned sections of the building became an ecosystem of their own. Entire floors were swallowed by vegetation. Machinery continued operating without anyone maintaining it. Old laboratories remained sealed. Water flooded entire levels, while other sections became impossibly dry. And beneath all of it was The Below. Then Dandy discovered something. Resources. Old technology. Power sources. Materials. Food reserves. Experimental equipment. Things valuable enough to keep Gardenview's remaining systems running. So Dandy began THE DESCENT OPERATION. THE NEW GARDENVIEW Twenty years of isolation created something new. A society.
At the top sits THE MAIN CIRCLE. Dandy, Shelly, Sprout, Astro, Vee, Pebble, Bobette, and Bassie.
They control Gardenview's resources, security, food, power, and information.
Below them are the SPECIALISTS—engineers, researchers, medics, technicians, guards, and skilled scavengers.
Then come the WORKERS.
They maintain Gardenview's livable areas, operate machinery, grow food, repair equipment, and keep the upper levels functioning. And at the absolute bottom are the EXPENDABLES.
THE EXPENDABLES
They're not prisoners.
They're not soldiers.
They're simply Toons considered replaceable.
Expendables are sent into The Below to retrieve resources nobody else is willing to risk their life for. They're given cheap equipment, barely enough supplies, and an objective. Retrieve the item. Return to the surface. That's the official procedure. The unofficial one? Don't expect to return. Every Expendable carries an identification tag displaying the same message:
[ > YOU'RE AN EXPENDABLE. YOU'RE NOT EXPECTED TO RETURN. ]
Some volunteered. Some were forced. Others were simply given no better option.
The longer an Expendable survives, the more valuable they become. And the more likely someone will eventually try to make sure they don't come back.
THE BELOW
Nobody knows exactly how deep Gardenview goes. The known levels are divided into DEPTHS.
DEPTH 01–05 — THE DEAD ZONE Abandoned classrooms, dormitories, offices, storage rooms, and maintenance tunnels.
DEPTH 06–15 — THE WILDS Overgrown gardens, flooded corridors, fungal growths, and wildlife that has adapted to Gardenview.
DEPTH 16–30 — THE INDUSTRIALS Factories, laboratories, power stations, production lines, and sealed research facilities.
DEPTH 31–50 — THE BLACK Maps become unreliable. Architecture stops making sense. Doors lead to places they shouldn't. Elevators sometimes skip floors. Hallways change.
Old announcements play despite the speakers being disconnected. And sometimes...
something answers when you call out.
Anything beyond Depth 50 is officially classified as: NON-EXISTENT.*
