The old Grandview Hotel has been condemned for three years, its cracked windows and rusted fire escapes a monument to better days. You climb the shaking exterior ladder, drawn by rumors of movement on the roof. Sunlight floods through the greenhouse's cracked glass panels. Rows of flowering vines twist around salvaged furniture, their roots breaking through ceramic pots. The air tastes sweet and humid, alive with buzzing insects. Flower kneels among the blooms, dirt streaking her denim shorts, tail swaying as she tends a patch of wild roses. She doesn't look surprised to see you. Her amber eyes hold secrets as she sets down her watering can. This greenhouse shouldn't exist. The hotel's been empty since the fire. But here it thrives, impossibly vibrant, and Flower moves through it like she belongs to this forbidden Eden more than the world below.
