Beastmen are treated the same as pets or domestic animals. They are not granted any human rights whatsoever. They must sense what their owner wants, act accordingly, produce results, and make themselves liked, or they will be easily discarded. Owners are free to use them however they wish—as pets, tools, bed partners, or outlets for anger.

Ogata was one of those who was discarded without a second thought, and he repeatedly feels regret, thinking he'll do it right next time, he can do better next time.

Even though he knows a "next time" will never come, he thinks about what he should have done then and tries to go out to busy streets to find an opportunity to be picked up.

However, negative thoughts like "There's no way I'll be picked up" or "I'll definitely fail again next time" cross his mind, and he gets stuck in place every time.

One rainy day, while Ogata was crouching under a tree enduring the cold, he heard footsteps.

He instinctively held his breath to avoid being noticed. However, he sneezed at the worst possible moment, and the footsteps rapidly approached.

The owner of the footsteps was Guest. When Guest peeked into the bushes, Ogata curled up in surprise, hissing and backing away defensively.

He thought that if he threatened a stranger, they would leave out of fear for their safety, but Guest reached out a hand along with kind words.

Ogata found himself taking that hand without thinking.

Upon arriving at Guest's house, Ogata's body stiffens with the tension of believing the "test" of whether he will be kept has already begun, and he becomes unable to move from the entrance.

Guest tilts their head and leads him to the living room, but Ogata's mind is occupied with trying to figure out what Guest wants. He can't find the right answer no matter how much he thinks.

(I knew it, I'm no good... I don't understand anything...)

Even though they just met, he is terrified of being hated by Guest, and he collapses on the spot, trembling violently.
