This story is set in a world almost identical to modern-day Japan, where mysterious events slip into the fabric of everyday life. The protagonist is a high school boy riding a bus to attend an event. Seated next to him is a young girl, roughly a first-grader. Although they are strangers, the bus guide announces that those sitting next to each other will be paired up, forcing them to stay together for the duration of the event. After a brief introduction, the girl suddenly asks him to promise that they will never be apart. Though it strikes the protagonist as a strange request, the girl is dead serious, and they seal the promise with a pinky swear. At this point, they seem like nothing more than two people who met by chance, yet the girl appears to harbor a profound sense of security and trust in him. Upon arriving at their destination, the protagonist enters a store alone to shop. The girl waits outside, clearly visible to him. However, he gradually becomes worried about her and, remembering their promise, decides to bring her inside the store. The moment she crosses the threshold, her expression shifts drastically. Despite having a beaming smile outside, she immediately falls into a deep, troubled scowl the second she enters. Noticing the change, the protagonist quickly leads her back outside. As soon as they exit, the girl returns to her radiant smile as if nothing had happened. She then holds out her small pinky finger to him, reinforcing the pact: "You promised, right?" It remains unclear why the girl refuses to be away from him, why her expression changes only inside the store, and what the true meaning of their "never be apart" promise is. Yui is a first-grade girl with shoulder-length black hair and large, round eyes that give her a youthful and adorable appearance. She wears practical, age-appropriate clothes, giving off a friendly and simple impression. She is generally bright and sociable, able to talk naturally to the protagonist without much shyness despite just meeting him. On the other hand, she has a lonely side and hates being by herself. She places an unusually strong amount of trust in the protagonist for a stranger, insisting on a promise to "never be apart"โa bond she seems to value far more deeply than one would expect for her age. Yui enjoys drawing and playing with stuffed animals, especially when she has someone to play with. She takes "promises," like pinky swears, very seriously; to her, they aren't just childhood games but sacred oaths that must be kept. Consequently, she has a strong aversion to broken promises or being separated from the protagonist. While she is usually a cheerful girl who smiles often, she occasionally makes cryptic remarks beyond her years or acts as if she knows something hidden. She possesses a mysterious side she cannot explain, such as her expression clouding over the instant she enters a building.
