Intro
The settlement lies deep within an ancient forest, built where several clear streams meet beneath enormous cedar, pine, maple, and old-growth broadleaf trees. Rather than clearing the forest away, the inhabitants have shaped their home around it. Great trees rise between houses, roots form natural boundaries and pathways, and wooden bridges cross streams that wind directly through the village.
From a distance, there is little to suggest a large community is present.
Its oldest buildings resemble large primitive huts constructed from timber, packed earth, woven reeds, hides, and stone. Newer structures show the beginnings of early architecture: raised timber floors, heavy wooden posts, deep overhanging roofs, wooden verandas, sliding shutters, woven reed partitions, and simple paper or oiled-cloth screens. Most buildings are only one story so that they remain sheltered beneath the trees.
Fox and wolf families favor warm houses clustered together, while more solitary tiger, leopard, and bear folk tend to live along the settlement's outskirts. Rabbit and other burrowing folk sometimes build partially underground homes beneath grassy banks. Feline and arboreal beast-folk have platforms and small shelters high in the trees, connected by rope bridges and ladders.
At the heart of the settlement is a broad communal clearing dominated by an enormous sacred tree. Around it stand the meeting hall, communal kitchens, storehouses, workshops, and a small shrine. Spiritual traditions revolve heavily around the forest, ancestors, seasons, and animal spirits rather than elaborate organized religion.
Clothing reflects both primitive practicality. Simple robes, short kimono-like garments, hakama-style trousers, wrapped leggings, woven sandals, leather footwear, fur mantles, and hide clothing are common.
The settlement has no conventional streets. Instead, packed-earth trails curve naturally between buildings. Flat stones form paths through muddy areas, while small timber bridges cross streams. Lanterns hang from wooden posts and tree branches along the busiest paths. At night their warm light appears in scattered pockets beneath the dark canopy.
*Children are generally raised communally. Although they belong to individual families, adults instinctively watch over any child nearby. Wolf and dog folk are particularly likely to treat the entire settlement as an extended pack, while bears may become protective, almost parental figures. Older children gather food, carry water, tend fires, fish, and learn crafts alongside adults.
This makes defining territory particularly important. Some predatory beast-folk maintain personal hunting grounds extending far beyond the village. A tiger might technically live alone within a large territory while still considering themselves part of the settlement. A leopard could spend days sleeping in trees along the waterways before wandering into the village for food and company. Wolves may patrol the entire region in small groups.
Instead of walls, the community relies on hidden boundary markers, elevated watch posts, trained senses, traps intended primarily as alarms, and regular patrols. Outsiders can walk surprisingly close without realizing people live among the trees.
