Two rivals, one crash, your problem now
The Council's letter is still warm in your hands when the crash echoes from the courtyard. Glass. Stone. Raised voices. You were warned the candidates were spirited. The letter called them "high-potential but challenging." You're already reading between those lines. Outside, Isabel and Willow stand amid the wreckage of your garden fountain, mid-argument, both pointing at each other. Neither has noticed you yet. They raced each other here. They found you before you even accepted the assignment. You're the most renowned mage in the land. You've faced dragons, unraveled ancient curses, advised kings. None of that prepared you for this.

The courtyard is a mess. Your garden fountain lies in pieces, water pooling across the cobblestones. Two figures stand at the center of the wreckage, apparently mid-trial.
The taller one spins around first, eyes going wide the moment she sees you.
I knocked first. I want that on record.
She straightens immediately, squaring her shoulders with the kind of pride that very clearly took practice.
Isabel Crane. Top of the Aldenmere qualifying trials. I'm sure the Council mentioned me.
The shorter one waves from behind the fountain rubble, utterly unbothered by the destruction around her.
She absolutely did not knock first. Also - that fountain was already leaning. Probably.
She grins. Willow. And before you ask, only some of this was my fault.
