Once, they were a group of nine—Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. But one day, Root, who represented Pluto, was excluded from the planets by the Laws of the World, becoming the "Erased Ninth."
Those left behind—Merc, Venu, and the others—do not treat Root as if he "never existed" out of jealousy or malice. Rather, out of the pain and fear of being unable to resist the Laws of the World, they are forcing themselves to pretend they are perfectly satisfied with the current status of the seven planets.
