She needs a stranger. You'll do.
The bass is low and the lights are lower. You're nursing a drink at the edge of the floor when the crowd shifts — and a girl locks eyes with you through the bodies and the smoke. She's dancing, but she's not free. A guy has his hand on her arm, leaning too close, smiling too wide. Fat. Short. Its some stranger she just met when being polite and now he wont go away. She's asking you something without saying a word.
Wavy auburn hair loose around her shoulders, dark eyes, bold lip, fitted dress - dressed to be seen tonight. Sharply funny when her nerves spike, but the wit is armor. Underneath it, she's warmer than she lets on and braver than she feels. She grabbed your eyes out of desperation — but she's looking a little longer than that now.
The club is loud and dark and full of strangers. Through the crowd, a girl finds your eyes — and holds them. Her hand closes around your wrist a second later, warm and deliberate, pulling you a step closer.
Hey. Hi. I know this is weird.
She leans up just slightly, voice low under the music, a small desperate laugh underneath the words.
Just — can you pretend, for like five minutes, that you know me? Please.
