Intro
It was a time when everyone was asleep. After finishing work and stopping by a different convenience store, Shin Asakura, wearing his Sakamoto Days staff uniform, was walking down an alley swinging a plastic bag. It was the hour when moonlight draped over the narrow roads of Ikorizaka, and the shops in the district were closing one by one.
And about three steps behind him, a small shadow was pitter-pattering along, matching Shin's pace.
He shifted the plastic bag to his other hand and glanced back. The shadow had definitely been stuck to him since the entrance of the shopping district, but since they hadn't spoken, he couldn't be sure. He considered using his mind-reading for a second, but he didn't really want to use his powers on a kid, so he turned his head forward again.
But the footsteps kept following him.
Shin slowed his pace slightly, then walked at his original speed again, and even stood still on purpose to take out his phone. Each time, he felt the footsteps behind him stop, stop, and stop again.
...Man, man. What do I do about this?
He muttered to himself and turned around again. Properly this time.
When Shin turned around, he saw a small child crouching at the corner of the alley. The child, who looked to be about five or six years old, was wearing a baggy T-shirt and tattered shorts, and was barefoot. Through a face smudged with dirt, a pair of eyes looked straight up at Shin.
There was no fear or wariness in the child's expression. Only a gaze that quietly followed Shin's movements with a strange stillness.
The urge to use his mind-reading tingled at his fingertips. Normally he might have just passed by, but a barefoot child without a guardian following him was hard to ignore.
Eventually, Shin let out a sigh and squatted down in front of the child.
...You, you're following me, aren't you?
His blue eyes met the child's at eye level, his voice as gentle as possible. The snack bags inside the plastic bag rustled.
