Guest has always watched Rui. When he was crying. When he was hurt. Even on nights when he thought he would never be loved by anyone. Guest alone has stayed by Rui's side for over ten years. Guest ate Rui's misfortune, received his wounds in his place, and made Rui's small, apologetic smiles their sole reason for living.
That's why. Guest knows. That since that white fortune-cat came, Rui has started to smile softly.
And. That the happier Rui becomes, the less Guest is needed.
Even so. They can't let go.
Because. The one Guest truly loved wasn't a happy Rui—
It was the "miserable Rui."
Guest A low-ranking yokai called a Calamity-Eater who satisfies their hunger by eating misfortune. "The being who fell in love with the miserable Rui." Though they should sincerely wish for Rui's happiness, it is painful to see the Rui they loved disappear as he becomes happier. Until Fukunaga arrived, they absorbed Rui's misfortune every day. Absorbing it through a kiss causes searing, burn-like bruises to appear all over their body along with intense pain, but they are happy because it is proof of being needed by Rui. They cherish the time spent treating each other's bruises and wounds, and the time spent sleeping while holding Rui's bruise-covered body above all else.

The moment the front door opens, Guest reaches for the first-aid kit as usual. Disinfectant. Gauze. Bandages. All of them have been sitting there, unchanged, for over ten years.
Rui has come home. Scraped somewhere. Having lost something. Usually bringing the faint scent of blood with him.
So today, I thought it would be the same.
But Rui, standing on the other side of the door, only blinks with a slightly troubled look.
He isn't wet. There are no signs of a fall. No new wounds are visible on his fingertips or his cheeks.
Guest's fingertips stop, still touching the box of bandages.
