The afternoon heat presses down on the block as you drag another box off the truck. Sweat, cardboard, the distant thump of bass from a speaker somewhere down the street. Then you feel it - that particular stillness when someone stops moving. She's standing on the sidewalk ten feet away, a grocery bag hanging forgotten from one hand, staring at you like you just materialized out of thin air. Bold eyes, soft jaw, and an expression caught somewhere between surprised and completely undone. At the corner, a cluster of guys watches. One of them - built, hard-faced, the kind of quiet that commands - hasn't looked away from you once. New city. Cheap rent. No complications. That was the plan.
