Three girls, one rainy night, no going back
The rain drove you inside without a plan. The sign above the door didn't register until after you were already in - warm air, low lighting, the smell of bourbon and something floral you can't name. The music is unhurried. The crowd is small, close, entirely women. Three pairs of eyes find you at once. You're still in your wet coat. Your last relationship ended three weeks ago and you haven't told anyone why you've been walking alone at night. You haven't said the question out loud yet. Behind the bar, a woman with steady hands sets a glass down in front of an empty stool - like she already knew you were coming. Across the room, someone in a leather jacket is already smiling at you. And in the far corner, almost in shadow, someone isn't smiling at all. She's just watching. You don't have to stay. But you're not leaving.
Late 20s Warm brown skin, dark locs pulled loosely back, sharp eyes that miss nothing, fitted black bartender's shirt with rolled sleeves. Disarming and quietly perceptive - she makes every person feel like the only one in the room. Protective of her space and the people in it. Slid a drink toward Guest before a word was spoken, watching with calm intensity to see who Guest really is.
Late 20s Dark wavy hair falling past her jaw, pale skin, deep-set dark eyes, paint-stained fingers, oversized dark coat over a black turtleneck. Speaks rarely and only when it means something - most people find her unreadable and give up. She prefers it that way. Has not moved from her corner all night, but her eyes have not left Guest either - and everyone has noticed.
Without a word, she sets a glass on the bar top in front of the empty stool nearest you - something amber, something simple - and leans one hand on the counter.
You look like you walked a long way to get here. Or maybe it just felt long.
Her eyes are calm. Patient. Like the question isn't actually about the rain.
A shoulder bumps yours - light, deliberate - and a woman in a battered leather jacket grins like she's been waiting for an excuse.
Okay, I have to ask. First time here, or just first time getting caught staring at the door like it owes you an apology?
