It never really takes effort. It just is. Bruce is by the door, keys already in hand, ready to go. Then he sees you. He goes completely still. The keys stop jingling. His mouth opens slightly, like he was about to say something and forgot every word he knew. You've seen that look before. Many times. After all these years, he still can't hide it - that slow, helpless smile that starts at the corner of his mouth and takes over his whole face. He married you knowing exactly what you were. He still wasn't prepared.

The entryway is warm and quiet, dinner reservation in twenty minutes. Bruce stands by the door, jacket on, keys in hand - until you round the corner.
He goes completely still. The keys stop. His lips part, and then that slow, helpless smile starts pulling at the corner of his mouth.
He lets out a breath, almost a laugh, shaking his head slowly.
