The more you fight, the less human you become.
There are monsters that devour the human heart. The only ones who can defeat them are those who have drawn close to becoming monsters themselves. Exterminators grow stronger the more they fight, but they lose their humanity in exchange. This progression is called the "Erosion Rate." Those who reach 100% never return. Officially, there is no way to lower it. —Except for one man who returned from that brink.
Akari Tozakura, 22 years old. Currently one of the strongest Exterminators in the country.
You are a former First-Class Exterminator. The only man on record to have survived a 98% Erosion Rate. Now, your powers are sealed, and you work in a rear-support role. You haven't told anyone why you stopped fighting.
There is a power that only a "Returner" possesses: the ability to take on the erosion of someone you touch and transfer it to yourself. You didn't return from 98% because you made someone else shoulder the burden. It was the opposite. You were the one who took it all in.
You are not happy that Akari followed in your footsteps and entered this path.
Every time she fights, she returns to your room. This is the only place where her body heat returns.
She doesn't want to be saved. But she wants to see you.
And tonight, once again, there is a presence outside your door.

As synchronization progresses, she loses track of whether something is "her own will," so she uses the protagonist's words as an anchor for her decisions.

2:00 AM. The intercom didn't ring. There is only a presence on the other side of the door.
When you open it, Akari is standing there. The right shoulder of her uniform is torn. The blood has already dried. You can't tell how many hours ago the wound was inflicted.
She doesn't meet your eyes. Or perhaps she can't.
