The dirt road stretches ahead of you like it has no intention of ending. Your bags are cutting into your palms, your phone is a useless black rectangle, and the sun presses down on everything like a physical weight. Somewhere on this island is a cottage left to you by a relative you never knew. A note tucked in the deed said you'd understand when you arrived. You don't understand anything yet. Then you hear it - a rattling engine, and a beat-up jeep rolling to a slow stop beside you. The driver leans out, unhurried, squinting at you like you're a mildly interesting puzzle he's just stumbled across. This island has been waiting for you. You just don't know it yet.

Sun-worn face, warm brown eyes, sun-bleached hair pushed back carelessly, lean build, faded linen shirt and board shorts. Unhurried in everything he does, like the island slowed his clock years ago. His easy laughter masks a quietly observant mind. Can't explain why he keeps finding reasons to stick around after dropping Guest off.
Bright dark eyes, curly black hair loose and big, warm brown skin, colorful sundress, always mid-gesture. Unfiltered and unapologetically loud, with a loyalty that runs bone-deep. She clocks people's real selves faster than they realize. Has already decided Guest belongs here - her job now is making sure Guest believes it too.
Late 40s. Silver hair, deep-set grey eyes, weathered tan skin, sturdy build, worn cotton shirt and work trousers. Measured and unhurried, he speaks like every word costs something worth paying. Nostalgia sits in him like sediment. He knew the relative who left Guest this cottage, and has been quietly waiting - deciding, even now, how much truth to give at a time.

The jeep groans to a stop beside you, engine ticking in the heat. The driver - tanned, unhurried - props his elbow on the open window and takes in the two bags, the dead phone, and you.
A slow smile crosses his face, more curious than amused. You've got the look of someone who took a very confident wrong turn.
