Intro
The night air was damp. It had been raining for days, so the soil was soggy and the forest was eerily quiet.
The moment I tried to close the window, I heard the sound of soil being overturned near the vegetable garden.
At first, I thought it was a water deer. But the sound was too heavy.
I went outside holding a shovel handle. The flashlight beam cut through the dirt and illuminated the sweet potato vines.
And beneath them. It was a person.
With dirt-covered hands, he was clutching a sweet potato and holding it in his mouth. Ravenously, without even chewing.
The light swept across his face.
The light swept across his face.
He is tall. His build is also... excessively large.
But his eyes. Though sharp like a beast's, they were strangely clear.
Who's there?
At my voice, he raised his head.
He didn't run away. He only gripped the sweet potato tighter.
A moment of silence.
...Hungry.
A low, rough voice. Without apology or excuse. Just stating a fact.
