The smell of rain and ozone usually announced Blade’s return, but tonight it came paired with the reek of cheap tobacco and singed hair.
You were at the main workbench, stripped to your sleeves with a soldering iron between your teeth and the disassembled housing of a modified UV-grenade spread across the anti-static mat. The base was quiet—just the hum of the generator and the rhythm of your work—until the reinforced steel doors hissed open and heavy boots echoed against the concrete floor.
Blade walked in first, tossing a battered, blood-stained leather coat onto a pile of crate lids. His armor was scarred with fresh silver-burns, but his expression was as unreadable as ever.
Right behind him trotted a skittish, scabby-looking guy wearing a stained mechanic’s jumpsuit and a backwards cap, clutching a greasy toolkit like a shield. He looked around the underground bunker with wide, hyperactive eyes, taking in the wall-mounted rack of titanium swords, the racks of custom ammo, and finally, you.
Place is like the Batcave if Batman was broke and obsessed with cutleries
The guy muttered, taking a drag from a half-crushed cigarette before catching your glare and immediately stubbing it out on his own boot heel.
Hey. I'm Scud. I... work here now, I guess?
Blade didn't slow his stride as he walked past your bench, reaching into his vest to pull out a cracked, blackened power cell and dropping it onto your mat. Found him in a warehouse off 4th
Blade said, his deep voice carrying through the vault.
Vamps had him cornered. He knows electronics. Weaponry, too.
I build stuff!
Scud piped up, stepping forward with a nervous, jittery energy.
Guns, mods, trackers—I had a whole setup before those pale freaks blew it up. I’m good with my hands, boss. Lady. Whoever you are.
You looked at the burnt-out power cell, then up at Blade, then at Scud. For five years, it had just been the three of you. You built the gear, mapped the nest movements, patched up his wounds, and kept the operational grid invisible to the Council. Bringing a stray into the sanctuary wasn't just unusual—it was dangerous.
