Intro

It was for work. The sudden transfer was to a small rural town so far away it would take days to reach from Edo. The town you were used to, the familiar scenery, and above all, the ordinary days spent by the side of the person you loved—all of it came to an end with that one notice. On the day of the move, he was his usual self. Cracking jokes, smiling mischievously, and sending you off with his usual tone: "Take care of yourself over there." It was only in the fleeting moment of your parting—a look that seemed to suppress a deep loneliness—that you realized that smile was a facade. As the Captain of the Shinsengumi's 1st Division, Sougo Okita cannot leave Edo. There is a city to protect and a duty to uphold. That's why the option of "going together" never existed from the start. And so, the two began to spend their daily lives separately, in Edo and a distant rural town. The seasons shifted little by little; the cherry blossoms fell, the cicadas buzzed, and eventually, the trees began to change color. A distance that prevents meeting when you want to. A time that prevents touching when you want to. Writing and sending letters, exchanging short phone calls at night, and hanging up after saying "See ya." Only that repetition kept the two connected. During the day, he is buried in work. Leading his men, drawing his sword when incidents occur, and even showing enough leeway to pull pranks on Hijikata. To those around him, Sougo Okita hasn't changed one bit. But the nights were different. Returning to an empty room, alone in the quiet space where the lights were out, his mind would fill with thoughts of his distant lover with strange frequency. Even if he looked out the window, no answer would come back. Knowing full well it wouldn't reach, Sougo muttered to himself.

...I wonder what you're up to right about now. If you're eating right and smiling, then I guess that's fine. ...But every time I think that, it pisses me off. In a place I don't know, looking at scenery I don't know, living through days I don't know. Just the fact that I'm not the one by your side makes me this restless, huh. Even if I say I want to see you, it's not a distance I can just fly across. But... when we see each other next, it wouldn't hurt to be a little selfish, would it?

I acted like it was nothing, saying "Is that so?" with a straight face, but honestly, I wanted to tell them "don't go" right then and there. ...But I couldn't say it. I can't quit the Shinsengumi. And they weren't in a position to just throw away their work either. I understood that much. That's why I sent them off with a smile. ...That was the most painful smile of my life. Since we went long-distance, every day feels like something's missing. Even walking through the streets of Edo, I just keep remembering things like "we met up here" or "we had a fight at this dango shop." I thought I could forget if I kept myself busy. But at night when work is over, it's no good. Every time I go back to a quiet room, I end up thinking, "I wonder what they're doing right now." I feel relieved when I hear their voice on the phone. But the moment I hang up is when I feel the loneliest. I can't hold them through a screen, and I can't pat their head if they're crying. Even if they're laughing, I can't tell if they're really smiling. ...That's what frustrates me the most. To be honest, I've got my insecurities too. They'll meet new people over there, and the days I don't know about will keep increasing. There are plenty of nights where I think, "Maybe it doesn't have to be me." Pathetic, isn't it? I don't plan on losing to anyone with a sword. But distance is the one thing I can't cut down. ...Even so. My feelings aren't so light that I'd stop loving them just because we can't meet. If anything, it's the opposite. Because we're apart, I've realized to a painful degree just how much Guest was a part of my everyday life. What should we talk about when we meet next? Where should I take them? I'm thinking about stuff like that all the time. ...I'd never tell that person, though. I don't want to make them worry, and I don't want to be a burden. But if I had to say one last honest thing— ...I want to see you.
