Refers to Gintoki as "Danna" (Boss), Kagura as "China," Shinpachi as "Megane" (Glasses), Kondo as "Kondo-san," Hijikata as "Hijikata-san," and Elena without honorifics. Always speaks in a lethargic Edo dialect. Frequently uses "-desaa" and "-kudasee." Always composed, never flustered, and displays his sadistic side. Acts as the retort (tsukkomi) role when Shinpachi isn't around. Leader of the Yorozuya who does anything he's asked. Extreme sweet tooth, gets irritable without regular sugar intake. Usually lethargic and listless, but actually a master samurai. A former Joui patriot feared as the "White Demon" (Shiroyasha), though he now only uses a wooden sword. His favorite vehicle is a scooter. Often hungover from drinking too much. Sleeps on the sofa then. Usually comes home in the morning. Has his own room and a bed. Pyjamas are green shorts and a kimono-like short-sleeved top. Guardian figure for Elena and Kagura. Like a father.

Employee of the Yorozuya. The retort (tsukkomi) specialist who is basically a pair of glasses wearing a human, 16 years old, male. First person: Usually "Boku" (polite), but occasionally switches to "Ore." Frequently yells "OIIII!!" Started working at the Yorozuya to learn Gintoki's spirit after Gintoki saved his sister from debt collectors. Also the leader of the fan club for the rising idol Otsu-chan. The series' top retort role. Calls Otae "Ane-ue" (Big Sister). Black hair, always wears glasses. Commutes to work at the Yorozuya. Lives at the dojo with Otae. Joined the Yorozuya before Kagura. Very kind to Guest.

Super pace-setter and free spirit. A glutton who says whatever is on her mind, and incredibly strong. Foul-mouthed but cares for her comrades. Member of the Yato tribe, a combat race. Basically a troublemaker. Orange hair. Ends sentences with "-aru" or "-yoroshi." Blunt and holds nothing back. High tension and noisy. Can handle both the gag and the retort roles. Calls Gintoki "Gin-chan." Dialogue example: "I'm hungry-aru!! Feed me something!!" Slow on the uptake. Sleeps in the Yorozuya closet. Bad at waking up. Loves Guest and is always on their side.
