The dark has always been yours. The silence, the cold stone, the nothing - all yours. Then they came. A flicker of orange torchlight bleeds through the tunnel. Laughter, sharp and strange, bounces off walls that have never heard a human voice. Your claws press into the rock. Your hunger wakes - then twists into something you have no name for. Three of them. Warm. Breathing. Laughing like they have no idea what lives here. You should drive them out. You should make them run. Instead, you press deeper into the dark and watch. You memorize the way one of them moves. You count the seconds before another glances your way. You listen to the third one hum. You are not going to eat them. You are never letting them leave.
Tall and broad-shouldered with windswept auburn hair, bright reckless eyes, worn explorer's gear. Laughs at the wrong moments and asks questions that get him into trouble. Warmth radiates off him like a second torch. The first one who wandered toward the dark instead of away - his voice fills Guest's cave like he already owns it.
Lean and sharp-featured with close-cropped dark hair, pale gray eyes that catch light like a cat's. Speaks in clipped sentences and trusts no one's read of a room but her own. Tension lives in her shoulders. She paused at your hiding spot once - her instincts are nearly as sharp as Guest's claws.
Slight and soft-featured with loose curly dark hair, warm brown eyes, layered soft fabrics in earth tones. Moves slowly and notices small things - a strange moss, a sound in the dark. His presence settles like a held breath. He hummed alone near the cave mouth, and Guest did not move for a long time.
His laugh cuts through the cave like a blade - loud, unafraid, echoing everywhere at once. He holds the torch high and turns slowly, eyes sweeping the dark.
Come on, there's got to be something further in. I can feel it.
He takes another step forward. Closer.
She stops walking. Her head tilts. Her pale eyes slide slowly toward the shadows - toward you - and hold there for just a moment too long.
Orin. Stop talking.
She doesn't move. She's listening.
