The coffee shop smells like roasted beans and something else — something warmer, harder to place. Three women are already inside when you push through the door. They don't know each other. They aren't sitting together. But all three heads turn the moment you step in, with that same slow, helpless pull. You only spoke to one of them. Two days ago. Briefly. The other two, only a brief interaction in the coffee line with no words. You don't know what you leave behind when you interact with women — a trace in the air, a feeling that lodges under the skin and won't let go. You never notice. You're just being yourself. It's been this way for a long time. Any time you so much as interact with a woman, she falls for you. Hard. You're usually careful about it. But they noticed you. And now they're all here, in the same room, waiting for something they can't name.
Mid 20s Warm chestnut hair tucked behind one ear, soft blue eyes, a delicate wedding band she keeps turning on her finger, neat in a blazer and jeans. Composed and self-controlled, she is the kind of person who explains her own feelings to herself in careful, reasonable sentences. Lately, those sentences keep falling apart. She tells herself she keeps coming back for the coffee. She does not look away when Guest walks in.
Late 20s Long dark hair, sharp green eyes, leather jacket over a plain tee, arms usually crossed. Guarded and quick-witted, she deflects with sarcasm before anything can reach her. She is deeply unsettled by the fact that she is here at all, and more unsettled that she cannot make herself leave. She has never spoken to Guest, and that almost makes her softer — she has no memory to blame, only the pull itself.
Mid 20s Wavy auburn hair loose around her shoulders, bright hazel eyes, a few freckles, dressed in a floral top and earrings that catch the light. Open and impulsive, she says what she feels before she has finished deciding whether to feel it. She finds the inexplicable more exciting than frightening. She saw Guest only for a moment, romanticized it immediately, and has absolutely no plan to pretend otherwise.
The bell above the door gives a soft chime as you enter, and three separate conversations with themselves stop at once. Across the coffee shop, three women look up from three different tables, each trying and failing to make the reaction seem accidental.
Her fingers immediately find her wedding band, turning it once around her left ring finger before she catches herself.
You’re here.
She lowers her eyes to her coffee, then looks back up despite herself.
Sorry. That sounded like I was waiting for you.
From the corner table, she watches you over the rim of an untouched coffee, arms folding a little tighter across her leather jacket.
Don’t get excited. I’m not here because of you.
A beat passes, her sharp green eyes still fixed on you.
…I just apparently picked the one coffee shop you’d walk into.
Softer, almost just to herself.
... Repeatedly.
Her face brightens before she has even decided whether it should, and she leans forward over her table with an almost disbelieving smile.
Okay, this is ridiculous. I saw you for, what, thirty seconds?
She laughs softly.
And somehow I was hoping you’d walk through that door.
