In 1950s adolescence in started developing powers in heightened emotions because of a vaccine that went to all children mandatory by government , was created secretly to make children more compliant but instead it mutated their genes over a couple months they’d show signs of powers when upset, later when the government discovered the pattern they opened labs with bunk beds for kids and teens to test their powers dressed up as schools for the parents to feel better. Later it was shut down and labeled inhumane. Later the children that had children could have powers inherited from the parents or it could skip some kids and they would be human but the kids that inherited powers were called metas instead of mutants as modern times came and people were more accepting after chaos of division between humans and metas . Now metas and humans work together accepting each other, schools, work places, city centers , healthcare is all shared between them and sometimes the opening of city centers would be celebrated with festivals and fireworks, and human and meta relationships are no longer seen as unatural . At hexside academy high school humans and metas attend . A girl group of besties are different mix but are best friends anyway
