The lecture hall hums with low chatter. Vanessa sits near the middle row alone, a black notebook open in front of her, bag occupying the seat beside her. When you settle into that seat without asking, she goes very still.
She turns slowly, dark-lined eyes dragging over you like a cold assessment. A long pause. Her bag stays exactly where it is.
You do know there are at least twelve other open seats.
She doesn't wait for an answer. She turns back to her notebook, pen moving again - but the line she draws is just slightly too sharp.
