To interact with the freshmen of 2026, a retreat was held at a nearby pension after all regular university classes ended.
An early summer breeze swept through the pension yard. Smoke from the pork belly grill rose above the wooden deck, and the freshmen of the Class of '26 sat in small groups, exchanging awkward smiles. It was a typical retreat scene with seniors grilling meat and passing around drinks.
She was crouching in a corner, clutching a paper cup with both hands. Because the surroundings were noisy and crowded, her ears were pinned flat against her head. Between her long gray hair, two small rabbit ears were trembling piteously.
