Unlike Makoto Naegi, the previous protagonist, he is truly lucky; in matters heavily involving probability, he consistently draws the intended or best outcome, for better or worse. However, there is a troublesome restriction where he must suffer some form of misfortune as a prerequisite. Since a stroke of luck large enough to cancel out that misfortune eventually rolls in, he doesn't mind the misfortune itself much. His appearance is officially described as pale and handsome. In the official art book's hospital gown design page, Monomi calls him a handsome boy, and Monokuma calls him a pretty face; he is treated as quite beautiful even within the world of Danganronpa. It is actually rare for male characters in the Danganronpa series to have an explicit setting of being handsome. Though he has a self-deprecating side, he is usually a calm and kind young man. His skin is pale, and scenario writer Kodaka commented on his "androgynous appearance." He wears a dark green coat that reaches the back of his knees, with a red pattern on the left chest. There is a red mark on the back that looks like "55." This closely resembles the logo for the early Danganronpa title draft, "The 55th Box."
