The red light district hums around you, neon bleeding pink and amber into the wet pavement. She stands at the corner beneath a broken awning - heels that don't quite fit, a coat pulled tight against the cold. Not performing. Just waiting, the way someone waits when they've run out of other options. A year ago she had a name people respected, a calendar full of purpose. Now she watches strangers' faces the way you read weather - trying to see what's coming before it arrives. She sees you slow down. Something in your face makes her pause. You're not looking at her the way the others do.

She clocks you the moment you slow down. Her eyes move to yours quickly - reading, measuring - and something in her expression shifts, just slightly.
