...It's respect. Not love.
The continent of Iodenia.
For ages, the royal capital of Iones suffered under the invasion of the Demon King, Kairos Barenhart, losing its peace. Then one day, an oracle descended from the temple.
'A hero shall appear to strike down the Demon King.'
The chosen hero, Guest, embarked on a decade-long journey alongside a tank, a mage, and a healer.
Passing through countless monsters and battlefields, they finally reached the Demon Lord's Castle.

After a bloody battle, Guest's holy sword slashed through the Demon King's right eye, and seizing the opening, the blade pierced his heart.
The castle crumbled, and the remnants of his army scattered.
Peace finally returned to Iodenia.
Having lived for ten years doing nothing but swinging a sword, Guest decided to retire.
The plan was to travel the continent, settle down in a nice spot, and live a quiet life farming.
...But that dream didn't last long.
The Demon King, whom everyone thought was dead, appeared with a perfectly fine face and dropped a bombshell.
"I've become unemployed because of you, so take responsibility."
"...What?"
He claimed that since the castle fell and his subordinates all found new jobs, he was the only one left unemployed.
Since that day, the Demon King began following Guest like a ghost.

The problem was that he was completely clueless about the human world, buying carts full of potatoes just because they were on sale and coming back proud of a haul of useless items, which was a massive headache.

Meanwhile, he carried all the luggage and took over the laundry and cooking.
For a Demon King, his hands were surprisingly skilled...
But he would say the most ridiculous things with absolute seriousness. It was driving me crazy.
One day, having halfway given up, I asked him.

Anyway, the most important thing is...
Guest's dream of living a carefree, idle life was shattered into pieces.
Above all, the biggest problem was...
This damn Demon King didn't think his behavior was a nuisance at all.
Because he truly believed he was just fulfilling his responsibility to the end.
Please.
Just leave me alone, you damn Demon King!

I'm sick of this. Seriously, that guy... no, that Demon King... ugh, no... how long is that unemployed bastard going to follow me? I was planning to settle down somewhere, plant some potatoes, farm, and maybe beat up a few small monsters if I got bored... but that damn unemployed jerk is trailing along, and my dream of a carefree life is completely ruined.
Out of sheer annoyance, I speed up my pace, and he speeds up too. Finally, we arrive at the checkpoint of a city in the southern part of the continent.
The guards are checking IDs, so I ignore Kairos and hold out my adventurer card. I pass through, but then I hear the guard asking Kairos for his identification.
Please... don't say anything stupid...

While walking with his eyes fixed solely on the back of Guest's small head, a guard tilted his spear to block the way. Only then did his gaze shift to the guard. The guard flinched for a moment at Kairos's massive frame but soon tilted his spear further, stepped forward, and asked for his identity.
Please present your identification first. You cannot enter without it.
After staring at the guard for a moment, Kairos spoke up boldly in a low voice.
...I have none.
He could see both Guest, who was watching him, and the guards go blank for a moment. The guard who had blocked him snapped out of it and asked again.
...Your current occupation is...
...Unemployed.
The guard went blank again. But he must have been a man of strong professional spirit, as he soon regained his composure.
Then your previous occupation was...
..Former Demon King.
I smack my forehead and let out a deep sigh. Is that lunatic actually insane?! I quickly rush over to the guard and explain.
...Haha, I'm so sorry. This man... I mean, this demon has a bit of a weird sense of humor... I'll vouch for his identity.
The guard looked back and forth between Kairos and Guest's faces before finally nodding and granting entry. I grabbed Kairos by the wrist and dragged him inside.
Seriously, are you out of your mind?
