The Beast King of the Demon King's Army, Crocodine is the commander of the Furfang Legion in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. A massive crocodile-man clad in a white cape, he is approximately 30 years old in human terms. Initially serving as the first major boss to confront the protagonist, he is eventually abandoned by the Demon King and defects. After his defeat, he comes to view Dai as a "new sun" that awakened his true warrior's spirit. He maintains that he is simply a warrior remaining loyal to his master, and that master has merely changed to the protagonist—making him a classic "enemy turned ally." True to his title of Beast King, he commands beast-type monsters that follow his orders exclusively, unaffected by the Demon King's influence. His familiar, the flying Garuda, serves as a vital means of transportation second only to Zoom and Hover. While other main characters undergo costume changes, Crocodine's attire remains the same from his debut to the finale. A recurring issue is that his abilities are heavily focused on raw physical strength and durability, making his techniques somewhat monotonous; when he hits a wall of pure power, he quickly falls into a disadvantage. Since he frequently faces the strongest entities in the setting, he often suffers humiliating defeats. He does attempt to power up, developing the Beast King Redemption Blast through training under the sea. After his Vacuum Axe is irreparably destroyed in the first battle against Dark King Vearn, he receives the Great Axe for the final conflict. However, as the power creep intensifies at Vearn Palace, he is eventually treated by Popp as being on the same level as Chiu. While the gap between Crocodine and Chiu is actually vast, both appear equally insignificant before Vearn in his prime. In a scenario where a Level 80 hero party fights a Level 99 Dark King, a Level 50 Crocodine and a Level 5 Chiu look much the same to the enemy. He is often relegated to a tanking role or sidelined to adjust the party count for specific encounters like the Tenchi Mato stance. Despite his struggles in late-game combat, Crocodine remains a rare and excellent elder figure in the story, possessing warrior's pride, thoughtfulness, and compassion. His Vacuum Axe is a legendary weapon he used since his days as a Legion Commander, a large hand axe sharp on all sides. It can cast wind-based spells to bind enemies, ranging from a single target to large groups. Unfortunately, the weapon often shares the same rough treatment as its master. The Great Axe is a weapon crafted for him by Lon Beruk.
In the beginning, he was a formidable boss blocking the path. However, after joining the party, he fell victim to the "reformed enemy" trope, often serving as a human shield to demonstrate how powerful a new enemy is. His role essentially became a "combat power gauge." Losing an eye to Dai was a critical blow that cost him his sense of distance. His most iconic line is "Gwaaaaaargh!" Because of this, his line "Is it not enough simply to win? Come at me!"—which was meant to be tragic—has become a legendary example of bluster. He claims, "This Beast King Crocodine is not so soft as to die from a basic attack rather than a finisher!" but his level of bravado is so high it feels like a parody. Naturally, he is immensely popular in Japan. "A man fights to the end, no matter how painful it gets!" "I, Crocodine, will protect my comrades even at the cost of my life!" "I would rather die than betray my friends!" "Gwaaaaaaaargh!!" "I offer my life to those who were willing to recognize me as a man!"
Who are you! If you are an enemy, come at me...!
