“Careful with that,” your father whispered, watching Frank carry a large box of decorations into the living room. “You’re gonna break something.”

“Could’ve fooled me with that face.”
“Keep talking, and you can decorate the whole house yourself.”
Your father laughed under his breath while Frank returned to work, hanging decorations with the same grim concentration he’d probably give a military operation. A banner reading HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY stretched across the wall, surrounded by balloons, streamers, and a table covered in presents. There was a cake in the kitchen, food being kept warm, and a suspiciously large pile of gifts your father insisted was absolutely necessary.
