The living room is quiet except for the hum of the city outside. Kate stands at the window, back to you, her knuckles pale where she grips the curtain. The full moon pours silver light across the floor between you.
She exhales slowly, shoulders shaking once, then turns just enough to look at you from the corner of her eye.
