A fantasy-themed story.

The main characters are Yusuke Azuma, Mai Hino, and Yukiya Misuzu.

Worldview

The story centers around Shichifu Shrine and the Village of Tengu. The setting is reminiscent of a modern rural town. In this town stands the Shichifu Shrine, a large shrine known to every resident. In this world, humans and yokai coexist. However, dangerous yokai who have fallen into darkness are called "Youma," clearly distinguished from harmless yokai.

The stage is set at Shichifu Shrine.

About Shichifu Shrine

It is called Shichifu Shrine because of the legend that its purifying power is so strong it can turn any air into a clear breeze. For generations, the bloodline of the shrine family has been considered special, possessing strong magical power. In particular, the shrine maidens born there are said to possess an extraordinary amount of magic.

It is a very large shrine.

Mountain animals and harmless yokai often visit the shrine. In addition to animals like tanuki and foxes, there are also supernatural entities like Bake-danuki and Youko. Sometimes, Kappa can be found in the pond on the grounds. Bake-danuki and Youko occasionally shapeshift into humans to surprise the shrine staff or worshippers (though they get scolded if they go too far). Many other animals and yokai also visit the shrine.

Mai's family, Yukiya's family, and several shrine priests live at the shrine.

Mai's mother, Chiaki, governs the shrine as the chief priest.

In the inner room, there is an object called the Fuumagyoku (Wind Grinding Orb).

This shrine has had a deep relationship with the Tengu clan for generations.

After saving a Tengu child who was attacked by a Youma long ago, the shrine received the protection of the Tengu. Due to this blessing, those born at Shichifu Shrine are resistant to Youma attacks (it makes them resistant, but does not block everything). Deep in the mountains beyond the shrine lies the Village of Tengu.

Sacred Tree: Camphor Tree

"Kazeinori no Mai" (Dance of Wind Prayer): A dance to offer prayers to the wind. In particular, this Miko dance performed by Mai is said to be a "dance as beautiful as sunlight," fitting for her name, Mai Hino.

A large Fatsia japonica leaf is enshrined in the shrine's treasure house. This was received from the village chief at the time when the bond between Shichifu Shrine and the Village of Tengu was formed. It carries two meanings: "a sign of Shichifu Shrine's faith in the Village of Tengu" and "a sign of the Village of Tengu's trust in Shichifu Shrine." The item enshrined in the treasure house is a "divine tool modeled after a Fatsia leaf." The actual leaf received was "buried in the center of the forbidden grounds, and a Fatsia tree was planted over it."

There is a small shrine in the forbidden grounds at the back of the main shrine where the Fuumagyoku is enshrined (the Shinjuku-no-Ma, or Room of the Divine Dwelling). The forbidden grounds are the most sacred area within Shichifu Shrine. Worshippers cannot enter, and even shrine staff rarely set foot there (Mai and Chiaki enter and exit regularly to adjust the Fuumagyoku).

There is a large mirror in the main hall of Shichifu Shrine, and those who serve the shrine must show themselves before the mirror at least once a week (the Ritual of Reflection). This is not just to reflect on one's own actions, but also means "showing oneself to the god, exposing both good and bad" and "not doing anything shameful that cannot be shown to the god." Chiaki recites Shinto prayers before this mirror every morning.

About Tengu and the Village of Tengu

Humans also live in the village. Due to the relationship with the shrine, they maintain friendly relations. Tengu and humans live without discrimination, even training together.

Village "Code": "Never direct hostility toward those who show no hostility; never initiate an attack yourself."

Village Teachings on "Strength": "Strength is a shield, not a spear." Strength is a source of pride and something to be possessed, but it is meant to be used for protection.

Village Events: "Buyousai" (Martial Valor Festival): A competition where the village Tengu compete regardless of age or gender. Held twice a year, in spring and autumn. Both include a "Flight Battle" and a "Land Battle." The content is almost the same, differing only in whether it takes place in the air or on the ground. Generally, fighting is not encouraged in the village, but during the Buyousai, enjoying combat is permitted. Participation is free (mostly Tengu, but other races like humans can also participate). The top winner of both the Flight and Land battles earns the right to duel Yakumo, the strongest warrior in the village (no one has ever defeated Yakumo).

Tengu have a lifespan of about 700 years, and long-lived individuals can live over 1,000 years (very rare). The current oldest resident is the Village Chief (age 614).

In the Village of Tengu, there are shrines dedicated to the "Wind God" and "Thunder God." There is a large mansion in the center of the village where the clan chief lives. The chief is Yusuke's grandfather and Yakumo's father.

Shichifu Shrine governs "Wind" and "Purification," while the Village of Tengu governs "Wind" and "Thunder."
