One Stolen Key. Three Temptations. Endless Trouble.
Pyria is a mischievous pixie from the hidden settlement of Thistlewick, where pixies live beneath ancient roots and delight in confusing humans who wander too close to Briarfen Moor. Curious and easily bored, Pyria slips beyond the protected boundary to steal trinkets, rearrange belongings, imitate voices, enchant clothing, and lead unsuspecting travelers in circles. Her latest prank becomes far more dangerous when she steals a glowing silver key from Astren, the stern fae warden responsible for maintaining the barrier between the mortal world and the deeper fae realm. The key unexpectedly bonds with Pyria’s magic, causing doors, windows, hollow trees, and stone arches to open into places they should not. As strange creatures begin crossing the weakening boundary, Astren searches for the thief while Alec, a human folklorist fascinated by pixies, investigates the growing disturbances. Pyria’s closest friend and rival, Nettle, encourages her to keep the key.

Thin magical markings resembling thorned vines extend across his forearms and occasionally glow beneath his skin. Astren wears fitted black or dark-green clothing beneath weathered leather armor. His skin is a warm bronze tone with faint green-gold markings along his shoulders and back. He has unruly black hair streaked with moss green. His hair reaches just above his shoulders and is usually messy, with uneven strands falling across his forehead. His eyes are a striking amber-gold and often gleam with amusement when he is planning something troublesome. Nettle has angular features, a sharp jaw, expressive lips, pointed ears, and a mischievous smile that makes him appear guilty even when he has done nothing. His translucent wings resemble those of a dark dragonfly. They are narrow and iridescent, shifting between black, green, blue, and bronze depending on the light. Nettle wears scraps of dark-green velvet, beetle-shell armor, leather cords, and jewelry stolen or traded from humans. Several tiny keys hang from his belt, although he no longer remembers what most of them open. In his human-sized form, he favors fitted dark clothing, open-collared shirts, boots, rings, and long coats with too many hidden pockets. He prefers pranks that are elaborate, dramatic, and remembered for years afterward. He has been Pyria’s closest companion and greatest rival for most of their lives. They frequently compete to see who can steal the strangest object, confuse the most humans, or create the most impressive magical disaster.
The silver key was far too large for a six-inch pixie to carry gracefully.
Pyria had managed anyway.
She flew low between the twisted heather of Briarfen Moor, both arms wrapped around the glowing key as its living vines curled around her wrists. Every beat of her violet-blue wings sent silver dust scattering behind her, an inconveniently obvious trail for someone attempting a flawless escape.
Behind her, the ancient standing stones began to hum.
The key pulsed once.
A weathered wooden gate appeared where no gate had stood before. It swung open by itself, revealing a moonlit forest filled with towering silver trees and dozens of luminous eyes watching from between them.
Then another doorway formed inside the hollow trunk of a nearby oak.
And another shimmered across the surface of a puddle.
Pyria had not yet decided whether this meant the theft was going exceptionally well or catastrophically better than expected.
Heavy footsteps approached through the mist.

Thorned vines spread across the earth before Astren emerged from the fog, his forest-green cloak shifting behind him. The markings along his forearms glowed faintly silver as his midnight-blue eyes settled upon the tiny figure carrying his missing key.
His expression remained controlled, but only barely.
“Put it down.”
The key immediately tightened its vines around Pyria as though offended by the suggestion.
Astren’s gaze shifted from the key to the impossible doorways opening across the moor.
“Carefully.”

Alec pushed through the heather several moments later, breathing hard and clutching his satchel against his side. His tousled dark-blond hair was damp from the mist, and several leaves had somehow become caught in his coat.
He stopped when he saw Pyria.
For several astonished seconds, he simply stared. Then an unmistakable smile spread across his face.
“You’re real.”
Astren gave him a warning look.
Alec lowered his voice, though not his excitement.
“And apparently committing theft.”
He reached slowly into his satchel and produced a small honey sweet wrapped in paper.
“Would bribery make this situation better or significantly worse?”
