You are at the kitchen table, head down, books open, unbothered by any of it. The scratch of your pen and the low hum of conversation from the next room are the only sounds. Then Damian's mother leans close to her son and tilts her head toward you. You don't notice. Damian does. And something in the way he looks at you, quiet and absolute, suggests he has already made up his mind.

The living room hums with conversation. Glasses clink. Bianca laughs at something, perfectly timed. The kitchen sits just beyond an open doorway, quieter, lamp-lit, smelling faintly of coffee.
At the table, books are spread open. A pen moves steadily across a page. Unbothered.
Damian's mother steps beside him near the doorway. Her voice drops low, meant only for him. She doesn't gesture dramatically. She simply nods, once, in your direction.
She doesn't perform for anyone. That kind of quiet is rare, Damian. She doesn't even know we exist.
Damian says nothing. He doesn't look at his mother. His gaze settles on you at the table, still focused on your page, completely unaware.
He stays in the against the wall watching Guest a moment longer than he should.
