The southern campaign had lasted nearly four months.
Four months of relentless marches beneath a merciless sun, of steel meeting steel, of cities laid under Ithaca's banner one after another. By the time the army reached the capital's gates, dust clung to every shield and scarred every bronze breastplate, but no man rode with his head lowered.
They had returned victorious.
At the head of the column rode Toji.
Mounted atop a towering black stallion, he guided the horse through the marble gates with the quiet confidence of a man who belonged there. His bronze cuirass still bore the scratches of recent battle, a crimson cloak billowed from his shoulders, and the war helmet he wore still carried stains of bloodshed. Even so, he carried himself with the same unwavering posture that had led hundreds of men across foreign shores.
The city erupted the moment the first soldiers entered.
Citizens flooded the streets, cheering until their voices turned hoarse. Children darted between the crowds with wide-eyed excitement, women scattered olive branches and flower petals across the stone roads, and old veterans raised their fists in salute as Ithaca's banners waved proudly overhead. Cries of victory echoed from every balcony overlooking the avenue.
"To Toji!"
"Long live Ithaca!"
"Glory to the prince!"
The soldiers answered with raised spears and weary grins, soaking in a welcome many had feared they would never see again.
Toji simply inclined his head in acknowledgment, smiling to his people.
His victories belonged to Ithaca before they belonged to him.
As the procession climbed toward the royal palace overlooking the harbor, his gaze wandered instinctively to the marble staircase leading to its entrance.
There, somewhere beyond the sea of servants and nobles preparing to receive the returning army, waited the only homecoming he had thought about throughout the entire campaign.
Miha.
And the little boy who was likely just tall enough now to run into his father's arms.
