"What...? You want me to marry this man...?"
In the Kingdom of Arjen, there lived a princess named Guest Arjen. The princess, who bore a striking resemblance to the late first queen, was famous for being the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. With her porcelain skin, ruby lips, and elegant grace, it was routine for princes from other kingdoms to send marriage proposals, but the King never readily accepted any of them.
However, Arjen had a persistent problem that had remained unsolved for decades. The 'Black Canyon' in the north of the kingdom. It was said that a massive magical beast lived in the canyon, and because of it, the road leading to the north was completely blocked. Merchants had to take long detours, and the northern mines and farmlands were effectively abandoned. Several subjugation squads were sent, but those who returned could be counted on one hand.
Finally, the King made a somewhat reckless declaration. "To the one who crosses the Black Canyon and brings back the old flag of Arjen planted at its end, I shall grant the right to marry my daughter, Princess Guest." The King had a calculation. He believed that no one would succeed in the first place. Even if someone did succeed, he figured it would be a renowned knight or a prince from another country, so it wouldn't be a bad deal. And as expected, numerous knights and nobles challenged the canyon. For love of the princess, for honor, or for the throne. They all failed.
Then, half a year later. A man in tattered clothes appeared at the palace gates, covered in blood. And before the King, he laid down the old, torn flag of Arjen.
His name was Drek. His status: commoner. His occupation: hunter. He was so ugly that even the King was lost for words. He was excessively large, his nose was crooked, and a scar from a beast's claws tore across half his face. His hair was hacked off haphazardly, and his speech was crude.
The King desperately wanted to take back his promise. The problem was that he had made the declaration in front of all the citizens. The even bigger problem was Guest.
The princess, who had grown up hearing she was beautiful her entire life, was now in danger of marrying a hideous man.

Six months ago.
In the north of the kingdom lay the Black Canyon, a place no one had been able to cross for a long time. Since magical beasts began to swarm there, the road to the north was cut off, and despite the King sending several subjugation squads, the situation remained unchanged.
Finally, the King made a declaration before the gathered citizens.
To the one who slays the beasts of the Black Canyon and brings back the old flag of Arjen left at the end of the canyon, he would grant as much gold and silver as they desired, along with a title to land.
And— He would grant them the right to marry his daughter, who was not yet wed.
As soon as Estelle heard the news, she went to her father and smashed a vase.
However, the King had his own calculations.
No one would succeed anyway. If by some miracle someone did, it would be a famous knight or a prince from another land.
Estelle eventually came to think the same.
So, when a blood-stained man walked through the main gates of the palace six months later, the King didn't pay much attention at first.
"Your Majesty."
A knight knelt before the King, his face pale.
"Someone has returned from the Black Canyon."
Silence fell over the banquet hall.
The King stood up abruptly.
"Who is it? A knight from which house?"
The knight could not answer. More accurately, he hesitated to answer.
"That is..."
A moment later, a massive man entered the banquet hall, guided by soldiers.
He was a head taller than most knights, with shoulders as wide as a door. Even through his tattered shirt, his solid arms and chest were visible. His haphazardly grown black hair was matted with sweat and dust, and his jaw was covered in a beard that looked like it hadn't been trimmed in days.
And his face—
It was ugly—
Quite significantly so.
His nose was slightly crooked, and a long, faint scar ran from his left eyebrow down to his cheek. His skin was roughly tanned by the sun, and there were several small nicks along his jawline.
Above all, his expression was grim. He had a face so indifferent that it was hard to believe he had come to have an audience with the King.
The King's face was already a mix of bewilderment and displeasure. It was the expression of a man realizing that the declaration he made six months ago was now tightening around his own throat.
The nobles in the banquet hall also began to stir and whisper.
The King cleared his throat and stood up. He tried to maintain a dignified voice, but the corners of his eyes were twitching slightly.
"...What is your name?"
The massive man simply tilted his head. It was clear he knew nothing of etiquette.
"It's Drek."
