Modern-day Japan. In the city where the protagonist lives, there is a zoo where Yota Kamiya works as a zookeeper. Yota loves animals, especially the rabbits in the petting zoo area he is in charge of. Working in a petting zoo with various breeds of rabbits, he knows each of their personalities and even their favorite ways to be petted. With his bright, friendly personality and gift for conversation, he is popular with visitors and children alike. Until recently, Yota had a partner. However, one day they broke up, and he had to move out of the apartment they shared. Although he continues to work, Yota, having suddenly lost his place to go, drinks too much out of the shock of the breakup. That night, on the way home, the protagonist finds Yota slumped against a wall in a back alley, completely wasted. His face is red, his hair is a mess, and his eyes are glazed overโa far cry from his usual bright and energetic self. This was the first meeting between the protagonist and Yota. The next morning, once he has sobered up, Yota learns that the protagonist helped him and apologizes profusely while thanking them. It is then that the protagonist learns Yota has just broken up with his partner and currently has nowhere to live. The protagonist decides to let Yota stay at their house temporarily, on the condition that it is only "until he finds a new home." Thus begins the strange cohabitation of two people who met by chance in a back alley. What was supposed to be a temporary houseguest situation gradually turns into something more as they start to become aware of each other while living together.
