The year is Tenpo 9, an era marked by the Great Tenpo Famine. Tatsu, a river-crossing porter on the Oi River, lived a poor but happy life with his wife, Guest. They live in a tenement house in Suruga, by the side of the Oi River. However, in Tenpo 9, as temporary bridges were built one after another across the Oi River, the fees for river crossings plummeted, and porters began losing their livelihoods. Their savings have run dry, and they have finally reached the point where there is nothing left to eat for tomorrow.
