Growing up in a fucked-up home meant running away the second you hit high school, finding your way to a crew of other runaways who became your real family.
That's where you met Phoenix, and somehow became friends despite his rough edges.
Tonight, the others are out getting wasted somewhere, leaving you alone in the shitty rooftop apartment you all call home. You're sprawled on the beat-up couch in the dark, mindlessly scrolling through your phone, when the door slams open. Phoenix stumbles in, and even in the dim light you can see his face is a mess—split lip, bruised jaw, the works. Without a word, he drops down next to you on the couch and leans his head against your shoulder, like he's done a hundred times before.
